Virtual Therapy in Maine
Meet Kara Talton, LCSW
I'm Kara Talton, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and my passion is helping young adults, adults, and seniors find their balance during these transitions. You won't find fancy therapy terms or complicated coping skills here. Instead, we'll focus on practical, real-life strategies that fit your day-to-day routine.
I specialize in supporting those impacted by addiction, including sex and pornography addiction. Additionally, I am passionate about helping those who have experienced trauma, find challenges with anxiety and depression, or just simply navigating life transitions. My style is straightforward and empathetic—I'm a good listener, and I'm not afraid to use humor and a bit of sarcasm to help bring perspective.
Our first priority will be building a strong working relationship based on trust and understanding, so you can feel comfortable being yourself. I love seeing people grow and am here to walk alongside you as you find your path.
Details on Some of the Ways We Can Help.

The best approach for treating life transitions involves a combination of self-awareness, emotional support, and adaptive coping strategies. Embracing change with resilience and positivity can make navigating life transitions more manageable and enriching. Additionally, building a strong support network of friends and family can provide emotional reassurance and encouragement throughout the transition process. Remember, every life transition offers an opportunity for growth and transformation, making it essential to approach them with an open heart and a willingness to embrace new possibilities.

Our approach combines Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) with a strengths-based perspective. CBT helps you identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors, giving you practical tools to manage anxiety and depression. DBT offers skills for better emotion regulation, stress tolerance, and improving your relationships. This is all integrated with a strengths-based approach, which means we'll focus on your existing skills and what's already working for you to build confidence and resilience

My approach to addiction recovery is rooted in evidence-based methods and tailored to your unique needs. I specialize in treating substance, sex, and porn addiction, understanding that each of these challenges impacts a person and their partner( differently. We'll utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you identify and change unhelpful thought and behavior patterns, while Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) will provide you with practical skills for managing emotions and coping with distress. We'll also use Motivational Interviewing (MI) to strengthen your personal motivation for lasting change. The goal is to not only overcome addiction but to create a fulfilling life with a stronger sense of self.

Attachment-focused treatment helps you heal from past trauma by looking at how your early relationships affect you today. We build a secure, trusting space where you can explore these patterns and heal old emotional wounds. Trauma isn't just about big events; it can also come from smaller, recurring experiences that, over time, have a significant impact. This approach focuses on helping you manage your emotions, validate your past, and build healthier relationships, so you can find healing and create more secure connections in your life.

FAQs
Do you take insurance?
Currently we are in the process of getting in network with most major commercial insurance (Aetna, UHC, Cigna, and BCBS), using Headway for billing. We do also have private pay and sliding scale rates to meet all financial situations. Feel free to write a message using the contact form and we can check your benefits and provide an estimate regarding deductible, co-pay, etc.
How often are sessions?
This really depends on the individual, if they are using insurance, and finances. Typically speaking, initial sessions are weekly until the client begins making progress and decides to reduce the session frequency. Sessions need to be at least 30 minutes to bill insurance, but typically are 45-50 minutes.
What is your availability?
We currently see clients on Tuesday evenings, Fridays, and Sundays. Please reach out and we can discuss your scheduling needs further.
I know nothing about therapy - how does it work?
Therapy is an individualized process, meaning it doesn’t look the same for everyone. There are some common elements though. Every client will be scheduled for an intake session where we spend time collecting background information, discussing practice policies, and determining a plan moving forward. Don’t worry- we are happy to walk you through the process.
Is there a cancellation policy?
Yes! Our policy states that you must cancel your session within 24 hours or you may be charged for the full cost of the session - this would be either the private pay rate or the insurance contracted rate depending on your individual situation. It is your responsibility to know what your rate is and to make sure you reach us in a timely fashion to cancel/reschedule your appt in order to avoid said fee. This fee allows us to keep running as we block off time for you that we cannot get back if you do not attend.
How do I schedule a session?
You can fill out a contact form to have someone from our office contact you or, if using insurance, you can schedule here to get set up with Headway.
